The heaviest and dirtiest heating oils – No. 4 and No. 6 – are used in approximately 10,000 buildings throughout New York City. New York City passed regulations in June 2011 that will phase out the use of these oils over time, thereby reducing air pollution. In June 2012, the City announced new financial assistance that will be available now to help buildings convert from heavy oils to cleaner fuels. The City has committed $5 million to create a loan loss reserve fund through the New York City Energy Efficiency Corporation. In addition, the City announced that several financial institutions have committed $90 million in private lending for clean energy conversion projects. read more
